About OASIS

What is OASIS?

“OASIS” is an O.rganization A.ssisting and S.erving I.nternational S.tudents. We are a registered student organization of the University of Louisville and are here to help ease your transition when you move to our city. Our community wants to provide friendship and hospitality for international students, scholars and their family members. We offer a “family-friendly” environment and respect all faiths and backgrounds. Oasis is supported by a non-profit organization in the community that wants to help make Louisville a welcoming city for the nations. American volunteers bring meals, provide transportation, shopping trips, and invitations to their homes. The non-profit also helps OASIS by providing for needs such as transportation (a van), scholarships for special events, and other tangible needs that students have that may arise. OASIS is valued by our community because we care about you!

Who may participate?

Our programs and activities are open to international students of all nationalities and religions. Any international student, visiting scholar, or spouse who wants to make cross-cultural friendships can participate. Families are always welcome.

How can OASIS help you?

Volunteers in our group help new-comers with various practical needs they face when moving to a new culture. Many of our volunteers have lived in other countries themselves and speak other languages. They also understand the challenges of “culture shock” and loneliness.

Social: Friends, Family, Meals, Activities, Games, Trips…OASIS provides many opportunities for you to enjoy your time in America. You will make friends with people from all over the world in a safe, welcoming environment.

Cultural: In OASIS, you won’t just learn about American culture, you’ll meet people from all over the world. We try different foods, travel to different historical and cultural sites, celebrate holidays together, and have cultural discussions every week. In the past, we have had African heritage night, Chinese dumpling parties, Eid dinners, Persian Nowruz, etc… Every Friday evening, we have dinner and then share a cultural discussion. Everyone is invited to share about their own culture.

Arrival Assistance: When you first arrive, volunteers are available to pick you up at the airport and provide temporary housing for up to 4 days. We have volunteers who help you find affordable furniture, household items, and apartments. Finally, we are here to help you and answer any questions you may have about life in America. We want you to feel at home in Louisville. Our volunteers receive no payment for their time or help!  These services are free of charge.

Academic Assistance & Mentors: We have certified ESL volunteers and teachers who can read over your papers, and help with your language learning.  Our volunteers are also professionals in different areas of the community and willing to be mentors in your studies.
